What Is Gingivitis?

462040699Gingivitis is not necessarily the most severe oral health complication you could suffer from, but it’s important to realize how bad it can get if it is left untreated. There are, however, many ways you can prevent gingivitis and enjoy a lifetime of excellent dental health. Continue on to learn all about gingivitis.

Definition of Gingivitis

While you may know them as your gums, another name for them is the gingiva. When your gingiva become noticeably red or swollen, you could very likely be dealing with a case of gingivitis. Those who suffer from gingivitis might also notice bleeding when brushing or flossing. These symptoms occur due to a buildup of plaque on the teeth and gingiva and may be uncomfortable or even painful.

Gum Disease Spectrum

Gingivitis is commonly considered the first stage of gum disease, which can ultimately lead to a multitude of other oral health issues. Although the condition is entirely preventable and reversible, many individuals allow it to progress to periodontal or gum disease, which can contribute to tooth decay and even tooth loss. If you notice that you show signs of gingivitis or later stage gum disease, it’s a good idea to start paying closer attention to your oral health and work with your dentist to improve your at-home care.

Prevention and Oral Health

As long as you understand how gingivitis occurs, you are fully equipped to take preventative measures to avoid the condition. Brush your teeth at least twice daily (preferably morning and night) and floss once daily to keep plaque from building up on your teeth and gums. Don’t refrain from brushing and flossing if your gums bleed; this will only allow the issue to worsen.
